Wearable, Pervasive Computing Creating a Virtual 6th Sense

“I’ve been intrigued by this question of whether we could evolve or develop a sixth sense, a sense that would give us seamless access – and easy access – to meta-information, or information that may exist somewhere that may be relevant to help us make the right decision about whatever it is that we’re coming across…”

So Pattie Maes begins this talk about wearable, pervasive computing that’s certainly going to dramatically change the way we live / shop / research / interact (and much more) in the near future.

She’s not the greatest presenter ever to take the stage, but what she’s presenting in this video just might make your jaw drop and your spine tingle as you get a sense of what’s to come regarding emerging tech. Among other things, she demoes the ability to project graphical representations of data from the www upon objects (and people) that we encounter in the material world, enabling us intelligent, pervasive access to the networked information of the web.

And when this tech gets miniaturized, so as to shed its dork-factor, and combined with the mind-reading sensors that are currently in development, watch out…

We’re all going to have to upgrade our understanding of “netiquette” once this tech hits the shelves…

A friend just tipped me to this YouTube video about another non-invasive brain controller developed by a company called Emotiv. Skip directly to 10:35 to go straight to a live demonstration of the device.
