Lucasfilm’s Rick McCallum on Using Canon’s DSLRs for Film Production

Lucasfilm Producer, Rick McCallum, speaks at NAB 2010 about using Canon’s DLSRs such as the 5D Mark II in their feature films.

Although they’re currently using them as B-cams, he said that Canon DSLR footage intercut with the Sony F35 CineAlta camera is “indistinguishable.”

This maps precisely to what Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut recently said at Blend Images conference in Palm Springs about using the 5DM2 for feature-length Hollywood film production.

One thing that Shane said about the 5DM2 is that the in-camera compression gives the camera a filmic look, similar to film grain. So there’s no reason to not start that feature with your Canon 5DM2 today…

Thanks for posting this Shalom! I thought his comment about Hollywood being a fear based industry that is afraid of change was very interesting. It seems that there are some people who are afraid of these cameras while many of us are charging forward with a beautiful new tool.

  • Cinema5d.com – First ones at NAB to get the Rick McCallum interview! So great hearing from him.

  • I agree with Ryan. The fear based worldview is something I have to deal with all the time when presenting hybrid (HD video and photography) work-flow. Even though there will always be a fear based element in a percentage of clients, I think the tipping-point has been reached and it is less of a hurdle these days. Looking forward to experiencing more Rick McCallum-like attitudes in the future! Thanks for sharing this.
